The Location

Windhoek – Namibia

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia, situated in central Namibia on the Khomas Highland plateau at approximately 1,700 m (5,600 ft) above sea level. It lies almost exactly at the country’s geographical centre.

As of 2023, Windhoek had a population of 486,169, with numbers steadily increasing due to ongoing migration from other regions of Namibia. The city serves as Namibia’s social, economic, political, and cultural hub. It is home to nearly all national enterprises, governmental institutions, and major educational and cultural organisations.

Windhoek’s origins trace back to a permanent hot spring that was well-known among local pastoral tribes. Its development accelerated in 1840 when Jonker Afrikaner, Captain of the Orlam people, settled there and constructed a stone church for his community.

However, the settlement suffered neglect and destruction due to repeated wars and armed conflicts. Windhoek was re-established in 1890 by Imperial German Army Major Curt von François during the German colonisation of the territory.
